According to the United Nations, Indigenous Peoples the world over:

-have been, and are still being, discriminated against and deprived of their human rights and fundamental freedoms;

-have lost their land and resources to colonists, commercial companies and State enterprises, which jeopardizes the preservation of Indigenous cultures and historical identities;

-continue to be among the most marginalized and dispossessed sectors of society;

-suffer discrimination and face prejudices that are often perpetuated within societies; and

-are very often denied their rights even when laws do exist for their protection.

This is as true in the United States as anywhere else......

Recently, a United Nations committee on racial discrimination noted the persistence of the discriminatory effects of the legacy of destructive United States policies with regard to Native Americans.

In particular, they raised concern over Congress' power to:

-take Indian lands without compensation; and

-unilaterally abrograte treaties entered into with Indian nations.

They also voiced concern over plans for expanding mining and nuclear waste storage on Western Shoshone ancestral land.
